Whoopi Goldberg defends Jo Koy after comic’s ill-received outing hosting Golden Globes: ‘These hosting gigs are brutaI

Whoopi Goldberg on The View Monday defended comedian Jo Koy after he was panned for his performance hosting Sunday evening’s Golden Globe awards from Beverly Hills, California.

Koy’s outing – in which he was slammed by both the crowd and online – came up during the ABC talk show’s Hot Topics segment, with Goldberg, 68, explaining that while she had not watched the show, she empathized with Koy, 52, for taking on the difficult assignment.

‘These hosting gigs are brutal,’ Goldberg said. ‘If you don’t know the room, if you’ve not been in these rooms before and you’re thrust out there, it’s hit or miss.’

Goldberg defended Koy’s talents as a performer, as she said, ‘I love Jo Koy, he makes me crazy because he’s funny.’

Goldberg said she was not aware where Koy’s set Sunday might have gone awry, but that it doesn’t subtract from his overall comedic talents.

‘I don’t know whether it was the room, I don’t know whether it was the jokes, I didn’t get to see it,’ Goldberg said. ‘But I do know, that he is as good as it gets when it comes to stand-ups and it is not an easy gig.’

Goldberg said that she has been at the wrong end of poor reviews during previous hosting stints.

‘If you read any of the reviews of some of the gigs I’ve had where they wished me into the cornfields โ€ฆ it’s not an easy gig,’ she said.

Koy, sensing his opening monologue was bombing, acknowledged the poor reception during the set, saying, ‘Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up.’

He added, ‘Slow down, I wrote some of these and they’re the one you’re laughing at.’

His most notable poorly-received joke took aim at Taylor Swift amid her ballyhooed relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

‘The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,’ he said, to which the singer registered no reaction.

Elsewhere on the panel, the show’s Ana Navarro said that Koy ‘wasn’t funny to’ her in his Golden Globes outing, while Sara Haines said that she had been ‘nervous for’ Koy because she thinks he’s a talented comedian.
