Whoopi Goldberg isnโt here for ageist commentary on Dolly Partonโs latest incarnation as a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
While most Americans were celebrating Thanksgiving, Parton delivered a dazzling halftime show at the Dallas Cowboys-Washington Commanders game. The country superstarโs set included her classic songs โJoleneโ and โ9 to 5,โ as well as a spirited mashup of Queenโs โWe Are the Championsโ and โWe Will Rock You.โ
The performance, however, drew a fair share of online criticism, much of it focused on the singer wearing a crop top and shorts over a flesh-colored body suit. โNobody wants to see a 95 year old granny dressed like that even if youโre worth 650 million,โ one person wrote of Parton, whoโs 77, on Instagram.
Acknowledging the discourse on โThe Viewโ on Monday, Goldberg offered a concise retort to Partonโs detractors.
โSome critics told her to act her age. Bite me!โ she said. โAnd everybody who participated in this, you should be ashamed of yourself.โCo-host Sunny Hostin agreed, noting: โIf I look like that in one of them Cowboys things, I might have everything out. I donโt know if thatโs a belly ring or what, but I want what she has.โ
The conversation then shifted to Beyoncรฉโs 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, who was subjected to online snark after performing onstage with her mom during the Renaissance Tour this summer.
โSheโs somebody who doesnโt care what you think,โ Goldberg said. โSheโs someone whoโs thinking for herself, and Iโd like to see each and every one of you haters … do half of what she did on that stage. Letโs see your dance videos that you havenโt cleaned up. Donโt be shady, man. Lifeโs too short.โ
Similarly, Parton doesnโt appear to be fazed by such commentary. Appearing on the Amazon Music series โThe Walk Inโ last month, she vowed to dress โas sexy as I could beโ as she prepared to unveil โRockstar,โ her first rock album.
โWe want to show just enough,โ she said at the time.
