The clip seems to reference Aldean’s controversial song “Try That in a Small Town”
It looks like Maren Morris will soon be the latest artist to speak out against Jason Aldean’s controversial song “Try That in a Small Town.” On Thursday, Morris shared a teaser for an upcoming video that appears to reference the track.
In an Instagram post, she shared a brief clip of the video featuring a billboard that reads, “Welcome to Our Perfect Small Town From Sunrise to Sundown.” Morris wrote the following in the caption: “I’m done filling a cup with a hole in the bottom.”
The post also includes a photo of Morris wearing a black shoulder-less top, which looks like the outfit she wore to the 2016 CMA Awards, as Us Weekly notes. She won Artist of the Year at the ceremony, while Aldean complained about being shut out from being nominated. “At this point, I feel like I’ve gone out and done everything I can do to put ourselves in a position to be there, and people either vote for you or they don’t,” he told reporters at the time.” Check out the post below.Singers Brandi Carlile and Cassade Pope, who both supported Morris during a previous dust-up with Aldean, expressed their excitement for the video tease in the comments. Last year, Morris locked horns with Aldean’s wife, Brittany, after the latter made transphobic remarks in an Instagram video. Morris responded on Twitter by calling Brittany “Insurrection Barbie,” to which Aldean supported his wife by writing, “MY Barbie.”
After backlash from conservative loudmouths Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, Morris raised more than $150,000 benefitting Trans Lifeline and GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program by selling “Lunatic Country Music Person” shirts — a reference to Carlson’s criticism of her on Fox News.In addition to being promoted by a music video filmed at the site of a lynching, the pro-vigilante “Try That in a Small Town” contains an anti-protest message and racist dog whistles — all while professing to be anti-crime and pro-community. At the height of its controversy, the video was pulled by CMT and tellingly, Black Lives Matter protest footage was quietly edited out of the clip.
Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell were among the artists to speak out against the song and video, but supporters of Aldean’s message eventually pushed “Try That in a Small Town” to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. One week later, it tumbled all the way to No. 21.
