Shave the Day: Family goes bald to support 9-year-old with cancer

London Hamilton recently lost her hair due to bone cancer and at age 9 it was really hard on her, her mother Carley Hamilton said.

The Madison South Elementary School third grader had a seizure on Dec. 4 that was different from her normal epilepsy seizures, her mother said.

“We called for an ambulance. When London came out of her seizure she was in a lot of pain on her right side. The ER doctor ordered a cat scan which showed a ping pong ball-sized mass at her right 11th rib,” Carley said.

London was transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital where they did a biopsy of the mass the next day.
On Dec. 13, the biopsy results came back showing London has a rare bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. Since then, she has had had a port placed and started chemo. She will undergo 28 weeks of chemotherapy, and during week 18 will have surgery to remove her cancer.

Tumor is close to her lung
Her oncologist wants the tumor to shrink before removal because it’s so close to her lung, her mother said. So far London has had only two treatments out of 12, her mother added.London is currently unable to attend school because of the risk of sickness during chemo. She does Zoom calls when she feels OK, her mother said.

During chemo treatments, London and her mom are in Akron all week. On her off week, Carley said they go to Akron for office visits once or twice in that week, to check her blood levels and her heart.

“So basically we go to Akron every week,” she said. “Sometimes its admission for chemo or just an office visit to check labs and her heart,” her mother added.

London has just received a stuffed monkey that will set in her chair at school and help her classmates cope with her absence and illness. The monkey will be dropped off at Madison South and is from the Love Chloe Foundation, which provides these kits to children with cancer. London’s mother said London has Medicaid because she has not been able to work since her daughter’s illness began.

Loves Ollie the cat, books by Dav Pilkey
London loves her cat Ollie, loves the author Dav Pilkey (creator of “Dogman,” “Cat Kid,” and “Captain Underpants”).

Her favorite animals are cats and foxes. She loves watching movies and YouTube.

“She has the biggest personality,” her mother said. “She can make anyone smile even on their worst days.”

London has three older sisters, Cayley, Bryley and McKinsey who live with their other parent in a different household. London’s father is Nick Hamilton.

Her mother said London would welcome cards or letters. Mail can be sent to London Hamilton, 388 Jade Ave., Mansfield, Ohio 44907.

Her mother said the family would just like prayers from the community for London.

“Getting her story out in the community to let everyone know that there is a 9-year-old fighting for her life that still smiles through it all,” her mother said is what the family wants. “She amazes me everyday. Financial help is a bonus, prayers and good thoughts are very appreciated.
